The Native Americans referred to the Island as Pagganck and in June of 1637, Wouter Van Twiller, representative of Holland, purchased Governors Island. In 1966, the Island was transferred to the Coast Guard and in 2003 the Island was transferred to the people of New York. It has a rich history to read more please click here.
It’s a great day to spend time. As a child on special days it would be open to the public and enjoyed spending a morning and afternoon on the island. I remember a historic fort being on the island. Now the island is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 31st until October 12th. On Friday, the Island is open from 10 AM to 5 PM; on Saturdays and Sundays, the Island is open from 10 AM to 7 PM. For a list of activities click here please.

I was lucky enough to get to spend a long weekend on Governor’s Island when it was still in the hands of the Coast Guard. My father worked for the government and we had friends who had been stationed there.
What I remember most is the old fort mentioned. It has a huge moat that is dry, and I remember walking around in it and staring up at the walls that loomed overhead.
The other magical thing about it was being in the middle of New York City. The view of the skyline at night was striking and our parents could let us roam free on the island without any fear. It also made a great base for visiting NYC. I still remember China town and my first Chinese food ever.
